Hatha Yoga

I teach breath-centered therapeutic Hatha Yoga that adapts to individual needs. The classes and private sessions are suitable for both beginners and people who have practiced yoga before, including those with health challenges. We focus on breath and movement to enhance the flow of energy (Prana) in the body, and you will find that as the flow is restored, your body has the opportunity to balance and heal itself.

The style of yoga mixes the ancient practices of Yoga with modern mind-body techniques, helping you become an active participant in your own health and wellbeing. Contrary to popular myth, you do not need to be able to twist into a pretzel to achieve lasting benefits. For many people, micro movements (at least to start with) are the norm

A typical 90 minute class includes –

  • Centering • Body Awareness

  • Pranayama (yoga breathing) and Mudras (energy gestures)

  • Warm ups • Asanas (poses) – both static and flowing sequences

  • Deep relaxation

  • Short guided Meditation

  • Closing and Affirmation

By taking these classes you will increase your ability to manage stress, calm anxiety, achieve balance and deal with everyday life. You will also increase flexibility and range of movement and because Yoga is a weight bearing exercise you will improve strength, build stamina and bone density, help with weight reduction and target those chicken wings! Private Lighten Up weight reduction Yoga sessions are also available which include specific practices to suit your needs and a special "Day in the future" guided relaxation to help you achieve your goal weight.

It’s no wonder Hatha Yoga has been around for thousands of years and more recently included in modern health and wellness programmes for heart disease, stress related illness and many other health challenges.

Prenatal Yoga

Pregnancy is a very special time in any woman’s life. It is a time to take care of yourself and your changing body and make deep connections to your unborn child. The Mindful Yoga Therapy Prenatal Yoga classes have been specifically designed to allow you to relax and enjoy the different stages of your pregnancy, and approach childbirth with an empowered and positive attitude.

The classes are nurturing and gentle and no previous Yoga experience is needed to enjoy these safe, simple and effective practices.  You will learn yoga breathing, sound practices, deep relaxation, meditation and gentle yoga asana (postures) for pregnancy, birth and post-natal recovery.  As well as enhancing your vitality, mobility, general health and emotional well-being, Prenatal yoga provides a quiet space to develop your relationship with your baby.

Following the birth, these same practices will help you relax and energize. You will also find that the familiar sounds and rhythms of your breath will be recognized by your baby, helping them bridge the gap between life inside your womb and life in the world.

You can start the yoga breathing, sound practices, deep relaxation and meditation as soon as you find out that you are pregnant and continue after the birth of your baby. The yoga asanas (postures) can usually be added after your third month, but this does depend on your medical history. I ask that you discuss your intentions with your Doctor to ensure there is no reason why yoga would not be suitable and to give you a feeling of confidence before you start.

There are also plans for a Postnatal and Baby Yoga class, please ask for details.

Pilates

Celebrities, dancers, sportsmen and women and the rich and famous have enjoyed the benefits of Pilates for over 80 years, but the original method was often extreme and difficult to master.

The modern Pilates method that I teach takes things step by step and adapts to individual needs. Once you have mastered a skill you move onto the next, always working at your own pace. Because of this, the class is suitable for beginners and those who have practiced before.

If you are looking for a way to achieve a stronger, supple and streamlined body, then this class is for you. Many people also report nagging aches and pains just disappear.

You will find that each class works with nine guiding principles, they are –

·         Relaxation

·         Breathing

·         Body awareness

·         Alignment

·         Concentration

·         Core strength

·         Co-ordination

·         Flowing movements and

·         Stamina.

Using these principles, the aim of the class is to re-educate your body’s movement patterns, which in turn improves your posture and the way you look and feel.

‘In ten sessions you will feel a difference, in twenty you will see a difference and in thirty you will have a new body’

Joseph Pilates

Learning Pilates is a little like learning how to tie your shoelaces when you were a child. To start with you had to keep repeating ‘left over right, and right over left’ but then suddenly you stopped thinking about it and you were away! It’s exactly the same with Pilates, you might get a little frustrated to start with, but by learning the basics of breathing, body awareness and alignment you will quickly be on the way to a happier, healthier and fitter body.
